This is for all skywatchers. We would say it’s time you mark your calendars because May 2025 promises a spectacular lineup of celestial events. From rare planetary pairings to meteor showers and a Micromoon, May is offering plenty to marvel at. No matter if you are an amateur astronomer, or just looking for a reason to gaze up, here’s a list of the astronomical events in May 2025 that will sweep you right off your feet.

Venus Meets Neptune- May 2

Kicking off the month is a delicate planetary rendezvous. On May 2 at 17:07 GMT, brilliant Venus (magnitude -4.7) will appear unusually close to distant Neptune (magnitude 7.8), separated by just over 2 degrees in the constellation Pisces. Venus will dazzle with the naked eye, while binoculars will help reveal faint Neptune nearby.

Moon Dances with Mars- May 3-4

Just a day later, the Moon, only 5% illuminated, is going to glide past fiery Mars (mag 0.9). The closest approach occurs shortly after midnight GMT on May 4. Look to the Cancer constellation for this striking pairing, which is perfect for viewing through binoculars, but you can use a telescope for a clearer view.

Eta Aquariid Meteor Shower Peak- May 5-6

The Eta Aquariids, one of the year’s most graceful meteor showers, will peak on the night of May 5 into the early hours of May 6. With up to 50 meteors per hour visible from southern latitudes and 10–30 in the north, this show won’t disappoint. The 72% illuminated Moon will set after midnight, leaving prime dark skies before dawn.

May 12: The Full Flower Micromoon

At 16:56 GMT on May 12, May’s Full Moon, otherwise known as the Flower Moon, will shine from the constellation Libra. This one is a Micromoon, appearing 5% smaller and 10% dimmer than usual as it reaches its farthest point from Earth.

A Celestial Trio: May 22-23

On May 22, the crescent Moon cozies up to Saturn and Neptune in Pisces. Then on May 23, it continues its journey to meet radiant Venus. All three events will be visible to the naked eye or through binoculars, which makes this a perfect weekend for skywatching.
